Previously on Project Runway All Stars: Valerie won her first ever challenge and no one was sent home.
Hey guys! Welcome to this season of Project Runway All Stars Recap Reviews! This season is off to a great start. Unfortunately, I was not able to finish up my review for last week in time. So I decided to just start off the season with episode 2 (especially since no one went home last week). Now, lets get into the recap!
Challenge: This week's challenge was inspired by dance. The designers had to create a look that moved well on both the body and in the air. The runway featured a wind machine.
Guest Judge: Vanessa Hudgens
Thoughts in the Workroom: I really like this challenge. Personally I have been waiting for ever for Project Runway to do a challenge inspired by dance. I think that Sam's fabric is an excellent choice for this challenge. Not usually a lover of highlighter yellow. However, Kini's outfit is quite nice! Really glad Kini went with the orange ombre.
Asha: I thought that Asha's dress was interesting. She created a tan, tank sleeve, knee length, form fitting dress with brown detailing. The dress was accented with a brown "scarf" that attached at the waist. I thought that the outfit looked great on the model and walked great on the runway. However, I thought she could have incorporated some other flowing elements into her dress to add to the drama on the windy runway.
Valerie (Top): Valerie made an all red gown with mesh detailing. The neckline was plunged on a diagonal with mesh paneling in it that brought the overall neckline of the dress up. The dress featured a belt and a pleated skirt. I thought that this dress was extremely well made. It fit like a glove and you could just tell that it was a solid gown. The judges thought that Valerie made as smart dress as it moved well on its own without the wind machine. The judges also praised her for showing her perspective of a designer so early on. They knew it was her gown despite the anonymous runway.
Alexander (Bottom): Although Alexander had great drama to his dress, it was too costume for the judges taste. Alexander made a blue lace gown with a black leotard-like lining. He added a huge cape to catch the wind and attached it with matching blue lace cuffs. Personally, I thought that the cape looked amazing on the runway. However, I do agree with the judges that the cuffs were a bit much.
Sam (Winner): I knew Sam's outfit was going to be stunning when they showed him testing it with the wind machine in the workroom. Sam chose a light and airy black and white strip patterned fabric. His dress was short in the front with cap sleeves and a v-neckline. The back of the dress featured a huge train that flowed wonderful in the wind. Sam was very confident in his look, even calling it the best outfit he had ever made. The Judges loved this look so much that Vanessa Hudgens even announced that she would be wearing it! This outfit completely captured the essence of the runway. A win well deserved.
Ken: The color yellow of Ken's outfit is hard to describe. I would not say dark yellow but it was not quite green either. From this side of the TV, it appeared to be a rather heavy fabric (in a good comfortable way). Ken created a classic gown with a pretty belt and a flowing cape. This was a solid outfit, and very clearly well made.
Daniel: I loved Daniel's outfit. This dress was almost a camouflage dress with a sparkling black neckline trim. Although the dress was a bit sheer and required matching undergarments, it was a tasteful sheer. This dress just looked so comfortable and easy to wear. I would totally wear this in the summer time (maybe even to the beach).
Emily (Bottom): I think Emily was headed in the right direction when she started. This challenge screamed caftan. However, I wish she had not included the shorts. Emily chose a flowing purple fabric with white detailing. The top had minimal seeming and facing above the belly button. The neckline of the dress featured a braided detail out of the same material. Unfortunately, she did not create a matching bra/top underneath the caftan as it was sheer and the judges did not like seeing the model's nude bra. On the bottom, Emily used the fabric to create a sheer long short with a wide waistband and purple undies. The judges were not fond of these shorts and called them gym shorts.
Stella: Stella created a long black gown with a plunge neckline. She lined the neckline with chain and wrapped some chain around the body of the gown. Stella's flowing element was her black, leather fringe cape. I know girly is not everyone's style. However, I personally did not feel like this outfit totally captured the essence of the challenge. I did love the fringe cape, but I feel like it would have stood out more in a different challenge.
Fade (Out): Fade was inspired by the butterfly and wanted to capture the idea of metamorphosis in his outfit. He created a gold, form fitting dress with a black and white flowing detail at the top and a matching gold collar. Unfortunately, the judges felt that the gold material was to heavy to go with the flowing objective of this challenge. They also did not feel that his collar detail added to the overall look.
Mitchell: Honestly, I was surprised that they judges didn't call out Mitchell on this one this week. The dress was WAY too short!! Mitchell picked a cotton candy material and created a bondage dress out of it. The top the dress featured cold shoulder and a triangle cutout on the front. The skirt was just way to short for any occasion. To incorporate the movement this challenge required, Mitchell added some grey fabric on the skirt to catch the air. However, it did not make the dress any longer.
Dom: Dom made a pretty black flowing outfit this week. The skirt was so flowy that its was hard to tell if the bottom was pants or a skirt! The outfit featured a cinched in waist and silver detailing on the neckline. She also included flowing pieces attached to the model's arm. I think this was as decent dress, however, I do feel like it could have benefited from a pop of color.
Kind (Top): Kini has a very interesting look this week. I loved it at first glance, but I do understand the judges critique. Kind fulfilled the movement element of this challenge wonderfully as his yellow and orange ombre skirt brought the perfect amount of drama to the runway. His top however, was the questionable point. Kind made a yellow lace, plunged neckline top with a black belt. I loved the yellow lace (and if you have been a long time reader of my reviews, you know I don't generally like all yellow dresses). However, the judges felt that the lace in conjunction with the black belt made the top and the bottom look like different dresses.
Alright, that is about it for this week's Project Runway All Stars Recap Review. Comment down below if you think the judges got it right this week.
